Dog owners fear they can’t properly care for their pets amid cost of living crisis
Charity Dogs Trust said 31% of dog owners are worried they will not be able to give their animals all the care they require this year because of the cost of living crisis, responding to data from a new YouGov survey.
3% of those surveyed even said they would have to think about giving up their dogs, with the charity receiving a record 50,000 inquiries on the subject by worried dog owners in 2022, and with even more handover requests received so far this year, they fear 2023 could be even worse.
CEO of Dogs Trust Owen Sharp said: “It’s only the start of 2023 but we’ve already seen a record high in the number of inquiries from people who need to give up their dogs.
“At Dogs Trust, we know the joy dogs can bring to everyday life, especially when times are hard, and we believe the best place for a dog is with the family who loves them.
“If you’re a dog owner who is struggling, we can offer support, training and advice to help keep you and your dog together.”
