But some residents are more fortunate than others when it comes to having their postcode drawn from the mystery hat.

The postcode district with the highest number of average wins has been found to be Preston, new research shows.

There have been 455 wins in the Preston area alone spread over the city’s 11 different postcode districts – an average of 41.36.

The scoops include one player winning a new car and £50,000.

It was followed by Warrington in second, where there are 16 postcodes – each of which has won an average of 33.69 times.

Last year, 18 neighbours won £30,000 each after their postcode was drawn.

Narrowly third, Blackpool has 33.13 average wins across its eight postcode districts.

The popular seaside town had eight winners receiving £30,000 in 2020.

West Central London has been found to be the unluckiest area for the draw.

Similarly, there have only been 17 wins across the 28 postcode districts that make up East Central London.

Kirkwall is third on the list, with the Scottish town only having received 52 wins since the lottery’s inception in 2005.

Emre Aksu, a spokesperson from 1337 Games, said: “It’s not surprising that so many people take their chances with participating in the Postcode Lottery, with prizes of up to £500,000.

“The postcodes are chosen using a random algorithm, which is used to make the outcome unpredictable.

“However, it is interesting to see such a big difference in how often postcodes in certain districts are drawn.”

“It is also interesting to see many of the luckiest areas being Northern, while many Southern areas are in the bottom ten.

“Whether it’s down to statistical probability, population demographics, or even just sheer chance, it is fascinating to see which postcodes are the luckiest.”
