AS temperatures start to drop after what was supposedly the last balmy weekend of the year, it’s time to think about your winter wardrobe.

But making the best of what clothes you already have can save you from forking out a fortune on new gear. Here are some tips on how to do that . . .

LAYER UP: Wear summer T-shirts and vest tops under woolly jumpers to keep cosy and warm during the chilly winter months. Don’t be afraid to wear some thin fabrics — thin-knit cardigans and silky summer bomber jackets can work perfectly well when worn under your winter coat.

TAKE CARE WITH KNITWEAR: Washing wool frequently wears out the garment and shortens its lifespan. Try to spot-clean stains straight away instead of washing the whole item. You can refresh knitwear without having to wash it — just air it by hanging on a washing line or in a steamy bathroom. Or pop it in a large bag in the freezer overnight. The low temperature will kill the bacteria that cause odours.

SWAP SHOP: Exchange coats, cardigans, jumpers and dresses with friends. This is a great way to expand your winter wardrobe without spending a load of money. Don’t have anything to wear for that big night out? Raid your pal’s wardrobe for some new winter-warmer items of clothing.

THE HOLE TRUTH: Don’t throw away jumpers, cardigans or woolly socks that have a hole — mend them easily yourself. All you need is thread or knitting wool to match the colour, a darning needle and a pair of scissors — it’s a five-minute job which will help to keep money in your pocket.

ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH OR TWO: This is great if you want to get creative with your clothing and add personality. Instead of rushing out to buy this season’s cardigan, work with what you already have. You can replace buttons on a cardigan with new, bolder colours of the season, add fabric patches to elbows to reflect the new prints that are popular, or even add statement pins and brooches to jazz up an item.
