HALLOWEEN may be a ghost of its normal self this year.

Parties are destined to be indoors and limited to just family.

But that need not stop you having fun — and it need not be scarily expensive.

Here are some ideas . . .

ARTS ’N’ CRAFTS: Get kids making decorations with simple materials. For a paper plate bat, follow these steps:

1) Paint some paper black.

2) While waiting for it to dry, cut two wings from black paper — find a template online if you’re struggling.

3) Paint white fangs and eyes on to the plate.

4) Stick two wings to the edge. Pick up a pack of 50 white paper plates for £1.25 at Tesco, instead of £1.50 for eight at Hobbycraft.

TREASURE HUNT: Trick-or-treat may be a no-no in many parts of the country this year — but kids can still have their candy. Make a treasure hunt around the home or in the garden, maybe spooked up a bit. A 600g tub of Haribo Share The Fun Sweets at Asda is £4 — or get two for £7.

DEAD GOOD FUN: The whole family will love mummy racing. All you need is toilet paper — and the fastest person to get wrapped up as a mummy wins. If you don’t have piles of loo roll in the cupboard, buy a 12-pack of Andrex Classic Clean at Asda for £5, down from £6.95. Or another great — but gross — game encourages kids to put their senses to the test with a feel-box. Take an old tissue or shoe box and cut a hole in it big enough to fit a hand. Inside, hide something gross to the touch — such as cooked noodles or jelly. It’s then up to the kids to feel and guess what it is.
