Greggs has issued a major update on plans for new 24-hour shops

It has applied for special licences for both its Canterbury shop and another in the centre of Liverpool, on Lord Street.

If accepted by local councils, the locations will be the first Greggs to stay open 24-hours a day.

Greggs has also submitted an application to serve its popular sausage rolls and steak bakes at all hours at its site down the road from Canterbury Cathedral.

It is understood this application is for a takeaway service only and customers won’t be able to dine in overnight.

Currently, the latest closing time for a Greggs in the UK is its Leicester Square branch in London which shuts at 2am on Thursday and Friday.

The chain had hoped its capital city centre branch would be its first 24-hour store but the bid was snubbed by Westminster council bosses.

Greggs has already extended opening hours for around 500 shops to 8pm or later.

And earlier this year it revealed plans to open a  24-hour drive thru service.

There are currently 17 drive-thru locations across the country and it’s planning to open as many as 10 more by the end of the year.

Drive-thrus usually open around 6am and close between 9pm and 10pm.

Customers can pick up the usual sausage rolls, doughnuts and more from the comfort of their car.

Greggs currently has more than 2,300 shops across the country.

Last month, the bakery’s boss has said the chain is on track with plans to open another 150 new shops across the country this year.

Branches are also still being opened inside other big name stores, including Primark and Tesco.

The chain has opened up four Tasty by Greggs cafes inside large Primark shops over the past few months.

Meanwhile, it has rolled out more concession cafes to 28 Tesco stores across the UK so far.

The news comes after Greggs rival and the UK’s second biggest chain Cooplands closed nine branches recently.

The Scarborough-based bakery is the largest family-owned bakery chain in the UK.
