Major phone provider to give millions of customers free data – how to get it

A MAJOR mobile phone provider is giving millions of its customers more data at no extra cost.

From tomorrow (December 7) over 2.5million people who use Giffgaff will get up to 5G more data.

Giffgaff will be adding extra data to six of its SIM-only deals for free.

The mobile network provider offers a range of plans, known as goodybags, starting from £8 a month to £35 a month.

Four standard plans and two golden plans will get a free data increase.

Standard plans you can pay for as you go, but with golden ones you have to set up a recurring payment each month via direct debit.

Customers will get between 1GB and 5GB data extra per month, depending on which plan they have.

Here’s which tariffs are changing:

• The £8 goodybag will increase from 3GB to 4GB of data 
• The £10 goodybag will increase from 12GB to 15GB of data
• The £12 goodybag will increase from 20GB to 25GB of data 
• The £15 goodybag will increase from 25GB to 30GB of data
• The £10 golden goodybag will increase from 15GB to 20GB of data
• The £15 golden goodybag will increase from 30GB to 35GB of data

The mobile provider is also launching five new plans ranging from £6 to £25 a month. They are:

• A £6 golden goodybag offering 2GB of data
• A £8 golden goodybag offering 5GB of data
• A £12 golden goodybag offering 26GB of data
• A £25 golden goodybag offering 100gb of data
• A £35 goodybag which will offer 150GB

The change will come in automatically from December 7 – you do not need to do anything.

All goodybags include unlimited calls and texts, and the prices are fixed for the whole of 2023.

Giffgaff works in a different way to other mobile providers in that it doesn’t have contracts – just one-off plans for a month or monthly rolling plans for Sim-only users, as well as pay-as-you-go credit for top-ups.

This means if you’re unhappy about the changes, you can simply change your package or leave at any point penalty-free and take your custom elsewhere.

If you’d prefer to move to a cheaper tariff following the hike, then you can do so easily.

Pop over to “my payments” nd you can change your recurring goodybag, turn off recurring, or turn it on again.

In August, the budget carrier upped the price for customers using their mobile phones abroad.

For pay-as-you-go users, who top-up their phone with credit, the changes meant you’ll pay up to double the current price.

The cost to send texts, increased by 100 per cent from 5p a message to 10p.

While calls went up from 15p a minute to 25p a minute, and picture messages – known as an MMS – rose from 16p a message to 30p.

Consider SIM-only plans like Giffgaff – they often come with more data for a fraction of the price.

O2 also offers “rolling” monthly plans, where customers can leave any time with no fee, but there is a catch.

Of course, this is if you’re able to purchase a phone outright, or your contract has ended and you still have the handset.

Always shop around first and use comparison sites to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

You can also try haggling with your current provider to match a cheaper deal you have found elsewhere.
