Major energy supplier to give customers half price energy this winter – can you save?

THOUSANDS of households can get half-price energy this autumn and winter.

British Gas, which serves over 10million households, has extended its PeakSave Sundays scheme until December 31.

Customers who sign up can get a 50% discount on all electricity used each Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

Demand for electricity is low on Sundays so the firm is encouraging families to use as much as they want during these hours rather than at peak times.

The scheme, which began on June 25, has seen hundreds of thousands of households sign up so far.

You can register your interest for the scheme via the British Gas website.

You just have to give your full name, email address and customer reference number.

British Gas will then be in touch if your application is successful and you can start getting reduced-price electricity on Sundays.

You only have to sign up once and you will be credited half of what you spend each Sunday back to your account.

The credit will show up as “PeakSave Credit” on your bill or online statement.

Each month, British Gas will send you a breakdown of how much you have saved.

It’s worth noting, you’ll need a smart meter installed if you haven’t already signed up and want to take part.

What other energy bill help is there?

Ovo Energy is paying eligible households £15 a month if they reduce their energy consumption during peak times through its Power Move scheme.

Those taking part have to cut their usage between 4-7pm to less than 13.5%. The scheme is running until December 31.

Ovo is also offering the first 20,000 customers who sign up a free pack of two Tapo Smart Wi-Fi sockets.

The devices let you remotely control whatever is plugged into them and you can time them to switch off between 4pm and 7pm too.

You can only sign up to the Power Move scheme if you’re an Ovo pay monthly customer with a smart meter that sends half-hourly readings.

Meanwhile, a number of other energy firms offer grants to customers struggling with their energy bills.

For example, E.ON Next customers can get help via the firm’s Energy Fund.

Customers can apply for grants to cover energy bills and get help replacing appliances such as cookers or fridges.

British Gas offers households grants worth up to £1,500 through its British Gas Energy Support Fund.

Any British Gas or Scottish Power energy customer who is struggling to pay their bill and has sought money and energy advice is eligible to apply.

Meanwhile, you might be in line for either or both cost of living payments worth £599 or up to £300.

Plus, it’s worth looking into if you can get help via the Household Support Fund (HSF), worth £842million.
