SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is holding auditions for customers to become the new voice of its self-checkout machines.

And it means the voice telling you there’s an “unexpected item in the bagging area” will take on a slightly different tone.

The grocer posted a video on its Tik Tok account asking for consumers to reply telling it why they deserve to take on the responsibility of talking shoppers through the scanning process.

Customers applying to be the new voice could win 10,000 Clubcard points as well.

The video says: “Audition to become the new voice of Tesco checkouts by duetting with me.

“So, why do you think you’ve got what it takes?”

The video has since been liked over 168,000 times and thousands have commented on it – with some in stitches at the concept.

One customer said: “Can someone duet this with a Yorkshire accent.”

While another said: “As a Tesco employee I know it would drive my colleagues insane if they had to listen to me every shift.”

And one shopper joked: “Mrs Doubtfire voice – ‘Help is on the way dear, help is on the way’.”

It’s not the first time Tesco has made a recent change to its checkouts.

From September, tills across its branches started asking customers if they want to round up the total cost of their shop to the nearest pound for charity.

So if your shopping comes to £11.75 for example, the machine will ask you if you want to round it up to £12.

Customers can choose if they want to opt in or not by selecting the appropriate option on the screen.

However, the scheme is closing after this Sunday, October 2.

The retail giant said it will be reducing the number of staffed checkouts across its stores as well.

How can I find the best deals in supermarkets?

If you’re not so keen on auditioning to be the new voice of Tesco’s checkouts but still want to save money when shopping there or other supermarkets, here’s how you can:

Get a loyalty card

Plenty of supermarkets offer loyalty cards that offer up discounted prices and the chance to build up points to be used for products or petrol later on.

Asda is the latest supermarket to promise shoppers extra perks, bringing it in line with LidlM&SMorrisonsSainsbury’s and Tesco.

But remember, you should always compare loyalty schemes and choose the one that best suits your needs.

Known when to shop

Lots of supermarkets reduce the cost of their goods when they’re due to go out of date.

The best time to pick up these kinds of offers is in the evening.

But each supermarket branch will share its biggest discounts at slightly different times of day.

Make a list

One of the most common mistakes shoppers make is going out underprepared.

Drawing up a list will help you stick to what you need and reduce the likelihood of impulse buying.

Another tip is to choose a smaller trolley – or a basket, if possible – to shop with.

A bigger trolley will look emptier even after you’ve finished trawling the aisles, and can encourage you to pick up more items.

Swap to own brand

Supermarket’s own brand products will often be cheaper than going for higher-end stuff.

Consumer champion Martin Lewis previously revealed how switching to own brand goods can slash your supermarket bill by around 30%.

If you don’t want to make the switch, you can always try checking frozen alternatives to fresh fruit and vegetables as they’ll last longer.

Plus, you can try checking out the lower and higher shelves where customers are known to pick up better deals.
