Major bakery chain with 2,000 branches closing store with ‘best sausage rolls’ – shoppers are all saying the same thing

A MAJOR bakery chain is set to shut one of its stores – but customers have all been left with the same single thought.

Greggs, which runs over 2,000 UK branches, is permanently closing its branch in the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre, Edinburgh.

The sausage roll-maker said the branch will close for good before the shopping centre goes through a giant revamp, but did not reveal an exact closure date.

Greggs said all staff working at the branch will be relocated to a nearby store, meaning no jobs will be lost.

Locals and pastry-fans alike will no doubt be gutted about the closure of the site, which one Google reviewer said has the “best sausage rolls”.

But others reacting to the closure have all highlighted one thing in particular – how deserted the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre is.

One said: “Another one bites the dust in the ghost town mall.”

A second commented “definitely not a busy shopping centre anymore” while a third added “every time I’m there it’s always empty.”

And a fourth added: “It’s a ghost town with hardly any shops even open.”

It comes after Greggs confirmed it had earmarked another branch for closure in Bristol.

It also shut a branch in Reading last month in a blow for pastry lovers.

However, it’s not all bad news for the chain as it is majorly expanding its presence across the UK.

Last June, it announced plans to add 150 new stores to its books by the end of the year.

The chain also has plans to grow its portfolio from 2,300 UK branches to 3,000 in the long-term.

Last week, it announced thousands of staff will get a bonus of more than £700 after the baker made record profits last year.

The high-flying chain will split £17.6million between 25,000 employees who have worked there for at least six months.

It comes as the chain exclusively revealed its Easter menu to The Sun – and there’s not long to wait.

Foodies can snap up everything from sweet potato bhajis and rice for £3.35, smoky cajun rice with BBQ chicken and sweetcorn fritter for £3.35 and feta and tomato pasta for £3.25.

How to save money at Greggs

Superfan Tony Collins previously revealed to The Sun his three top tips for saving money at the bakery chain.

He urged customers to use the Too Good to Go app which lets you pick up massively discounted produce that’s due to go out of date.

Tony said he had snapped up a bag for £2.95 which came with three steak bakes, three baguettes, three sausage rolls, two cookies and couple of doughnuts.

He also said it’s worth signing up to Greggs’ app which dishes out freebies like sweet treats on your birthday.

The chain is known for giving away free slices of pizza to customers new to the app on occasion as well.

Plus, Tony said it’s worth heading to Greggs’ outlets that sell goods at knockdown prices, usually because they’re marginally out of date.
