What is macOS Monterey?

macOS Monterey is the next big update for Mac computers – created in-house by Apple.

Monterey is the 18th major release of Mac software.

And it’ll work across MacBooks (including Air and Pro), Mac minis, the Mac Pro and iMacs.

It was unveiled at Apple’s annual WWDC event in June 2021 – but with an October release.

The update is packed with features and is available totally free of charge.

One of the big new additions is the introduction of Shortcuts for Mac.

The feature is already available on iPhone, and lets users create their own automated systems to get things done faster.

Universal Control will let a single keyboard and mouse operate multiple Macs and iPads simultaneously, which is great for Apple power-users.

Safari has been redesigned to be cleaner, faster and more powerful.

You’ll be able to AirPlay content to a Mac from iPhone, iPad and other Macs.

FaceTime now has a screen-sharing option, making it more useful for work.

And there’s a new SharePlay feature that lets you watch the same content as friends in real-time – like a TV show or a new album

There’s much more available in the update, but those are the key highlights.

macOS Monterey supported devices

You can install macOS Monterey on any of the following devices:

  • MacBook (early 2016 and later)
  • MacBook Air (early 2015 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (early 2015 and later)
  • Mac mini (late 2014 and later)
  • iMac (late 2016 and later)
  • iMac Pro (late 2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro (late 2013 and later)

If your device isn’t included in this list, you can’t get the latest update.

macOS Monterey release date – when is it out?

Apple technically released macOS Monterey back in June – but as a “test” update.

That means only people who were signed up to the macOS beta could download it.

Now Apple is getting ready to release macOS Monterey to the world.

The official macOS Monterey release date is set for October 25, 2021.

On that date, the update will be available on all eligible Macs around the world.

Importantly, it’s totally free to install.

To get it, simply wait for the release date then start up your MacBook.

Log in, click the Apple logo in the top-left of the screen, and then choose About This Mac.

Then click Software Update and install the latest available software.

The update typically rolls out later in the day in the UK, and in late morning over in California, so don’t panic if you don’t see the update first thing on October 25.

Apple’s new 2021 MacBook Pro models will ship running on the new macOS Monterey software.
