What is macOS Monterey?

Apple’s next big software update for Mac computers is called macOS Monterey.

It’s the 18th major release of Mac software, and will run across MacBooks, Mac minis, the Mac Pro and iMacs.

Monterey was unveiled at Apple’s WWDC event in June 2021.

But it won’t be out until later this year, likely in September.

It’s packed with features, and will be available totally free of charge.

One of the big new additions is the introduction of Shortcuts for Mac.

The feature is already available on iPhone, and lets users create their own automated systems to get things done faster.

Universal Control will let a single keyboard and mouse operate multiple Macs and iPads simultaneously, which is great for Apple power-users.

Safari has been redesigned to be cleaner, faster and more powerful.

You’ll be able to AirPlay content to a Mac from iPhone, iPad and other Macs.

FaceTime now has a screen-sharing option, making it more useful for work.

And there’s a new SharePlay feature that lets you watch the same content as friends in real-time – like a TV show or a new album

There’s much more available in the update, but those are the key highlights.

How to install macOS Monterey public beta

As of July 1, 2021, macOS Monterey is available in public beta.

This is a test version of the software that lets users try the new update before it rolls out to everyone.

It’s possible that the beta test will be totally smooth, although you may experience some bugs – which is normal.

If you’re worried about bugs, it’s best not to install the public beta.

And if you are going to install it, be sure to create a back-up of your files and info first.

You can create a back-up on an external driving using Apple’s Time Machine software.

Here’s how to get the macOS Monterey beta…

  • Enrol in the Apple Beta Software Program here for free
  • Once signed in, choose ‘Enrol Your Devices’ at the top and click macOS
  • Then click ‘Enrol your Mac’
  • Choose ‘Download the macOS Public Beta Access Utility option’
  • Allow downloads if you’re presented with a pop-up
  • Let the download happen, and then check your Downloads folder on Mac
  • Find the beta installer – macOSPublicBetaAccessUtility.dmg
  • Open it and then double-click the installer – it’s a .pkg file
  • Back up when prompted, or ignore if you’ve already done it
  • Click ‘Continue’ and then agree to the terms and conditions
  • Click ‘Install’ – you may need to enter your password here
  • Once installed, you’ll be prompted to ‘Upgrade Now’
  • The download will complete and restart your Mac – this may take some time
  • Once you’ve restarted, the installer will automatically launch
  • Choose ‘Continue’ and follow the steps
  • Choose where you want to install the beta – your main drive is the usual choice
  • Choose ‘Install’, enter your password, continue through the options and let your Mac restart
  • Your Mac will install and upgrade to the new software
