The Lord Mayor of London is planning to urge City workers back to their office for a grand ‘reopening’ week in April, as he tries to revive the capital’s deadened business district.

William Russell, a former investment banker and the 692nd lord mayor, is set to call on his contacts in City institutions, asking them to encourage staff to return to their desks.

London will enter a Tier 3 lockdown again from tomorrow, shuttering businesses once more and casting doubt over the future of hundreds of restaurants, cafes and bars who rely on commuters and office staff.

Russell told the FT: ‘January and February will be tough. I want everyone to buy in on this reopening.’
