The London Stock Exchange has appointed its first openly gay chief executive, poaching Julia Hoggett from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Hoggett, daughter of former Supreme Court president Lady Hale and barrister Anthony Hoggett QC, will start in 2021.
The 47-year-old will replace Nikhil Rathi – who became boss of the FCA earlier this year – and she will work under David Schwimmer, chief executive of the LSE Group which owns the prestigious London exchange as well as other businesses.

Hoggett, a mother-of-two, is an advocate of greater diversity in financial services, and during her 17 years as a banker she campaigned to make it easier for women to come back to work post-childbirth.
She herself was keen to continue her career after having children Patrick and Amelia, now teenagers, with her ex-wife Anne.
And despite a career working long hours for the likes of JP Morgan, Depfa Bank and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, before joining the FCA in 2014, Hoggett cites spending time with her family and children as her most important hobby.
She commutes between Dublin, where her children are based, and London, where she lives with partner Wendy on the same street as her mother.
She recalls always being treated ‘like a grown-up’ by her parents, and has described how they would ask for her opinion on legal cases when she was as young as eight.
Despite choosing a different career path to Lady Hale, Hoggett is set to be just as influential as boss of the stock exchange division of the LSE Group as it prepares to merge with data provider Refinitiv.
