LIDL shoppers have been rushing to buy an energy saving gadget that will keep you warm at night without putting the heating on.

The cost of energy has soared in recent months and households are looking for ways to save money.

Many are turning to the “heat the human not the home” motto hailed by consumer champion Martin Lewis.

The phrase relates to buying products, like electric blankets, that reduce the amount you have to use your heating.

And Lidl shoppers have been rushing out to buy a Silent Night electric blanket which is being sold for £29.99.

The blanket comes in king size, three heat settings and costs just 3p an hour to run.

The blanket has 90 watt power and the current price cap for electricity is 34p per kilowatt hour (1000 watts).

So you can work out that it costs roughly 3p an hour to run by taking 34 and dividing it by 1,000, then multiplying that figure by 90.

Of course, all appliances, including electric blankets, have different wattage.

So you should check before buying a product how much it might cost you per hour.

You can use the formula above to work out how much it will cost you.

This is the cheapest we could find this particular blanket going for online.

For example, Argos is selling it for £50.

You can find out where your nearest Lidl store is by using the branch locator on its website.

You can always call your nearest store before heading out to see if they’ve got the blanket in stock and avoid a wasted journey.

Remember, it’s always worth shopping around when looking to buy any product.

You might think the price on offer is cheap, but sometimes you can find something similar for less.

When looking at electrical items, take a note of the wattage as well. The higher the wattage, the more it will cost you on your electric per hour.

But households should be aware of the risks that come with using the handy gadget – especially if you aren’t using it correctly.

If you do use them wrong you could put yourself at risk of electrocution and your home at risk of fire.

Electric blankets have become a must-buy for many as they are a cheaper way of keeping warm instead of relying on central heating.

Keeping the blanket away from a hot water bottle and rolling, not folding it when putting it away are just a couple of things to keep safe.
