Andrew Western wins with a majority of 9,906 with promise to fight for properly funded public services

Labour has retained the Greater Manchester constituency of Stretford and Urmston in a byelection called after the sitting Labour MP quit to become Andy Burnham’s mayoral deputy.

Andrew Western, Labour’s candidate, won by a majority of 9,906. After taking his seat in parliament he is expected to step down as leader of Trafford council, which he has led since 2018.
