LEARNING to drive is a big life step – but comes with a big price tag.
You have to fork out for your provisional licence, lessons and tests before you even consider a car and insurance.
Driving instructors charge around £30 an hour and the average learner needs 45 hours of lessons, setting you back well over a grand.
Follow these steps to drive costs down . . .
GO ONLINE: Apply for your provisional licence online. It costs £34, instead of £43 by post.
SAVE: £9
BUY A BUNDLE: Block-booking your lessons in advance often means a discount with your instructor. With Red Driving School, you can get six lessons for the price of four.
SAVE: £60 on six lessons
DEAL WITH IT: You can often find deals to make lessons cheaper. Current offers include 5.5 per cent cashback when booking with driving school PassMeFast. See topcashback.co.uk/passmefast.
ASK A FRIEND: Cut the amount of lessons you need by asking a friend or family member to do some driving practice with you.
SAVE: Around £30 per lesson
COVER WITH CARE: Shop around for specific learner driver insurance while you’re practising. It can usually be purchased by the day, week or month, often from less than £2 a day. Try the RAC or Marmalade.
GET ’APPY: Rather than fork out for a driving test app, such as the Driving Theory Test 4-in-1 Kit for £4.99, try a free one, such as the DVSA’s Driving Theory Test 2021 UK app.
SAVE: £4.99
BOOK A WEEKDAY TEST: Having your practical test midweek costs £62 compared to £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
SAVE: £13
