Jessie passed away early on Sunday morning at home after a fight against cancer after remaining ill for several months.
As per a press release from the ANC, Jessie Duarte had been on medical leave since November 2021 and was receiving treatment for cancer.
ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte was buried in Johannesburg’s Westpark Cemetery following Muslim traditions a few hours after she passed away.
Hundreds of politicians and businesspeople attended Duarte’s funeral, along with suspended party secretary-general Ace Magashule, as he has stepped away from all ANC activities. Former president Kgalema Motlanthe was also present.
Former President Jacob Zuma also expressed his condolences through his foundation. In his eulogy to mourners at the funeral, Ramaphosa said they had gathered in sorrow and disbelief, adding that ANC officials had arranged to see Duarte on her death.
