ANOTHER year and another entry to the Call of Duty series is here, but Modern Warfare 2 gave fans new hope.
There have been some less than desirable entries over the years but the last game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, made fans believe that a new standard was being set.
I’m here to tell you that this is not the case, and with the campaign mode for Modern Warfare 3 now out, I can safely say it’s one of the series’ worst games.
Call of Duty is all about bombastic battles and explosive set pieces, as you rush from cover to cover and missiles drop in your wake.
However, in Modern Warfare 3 the stakes have never been lower, and the heart of the series is nowhere to be found.
The campaign is supposedly a direct sequel to last year’s CoD:MW2, and Makarov has been captured and imprisoned.

Thanks to the PMC, he breaks out and tries to start WW3 once again.
The issue is that we’ve seen it before – not only in last year’s release but also in Modern Warfare 3 in 2011.
The life has been sucked out of every single mission and encounter, and all of CoD’s signature set pieces are absent.
It feels like a number of lazy adaptations of multiplayer maps with boring solo objectives shoved in.

Payload feels like a genuine retread of a mission from last year’s game, and Deep Cover is a short infiltration mission that would’ve been a cutscene in earlier games.
Passenger is the modern No Russian without any of the shock or impact, and Danger Close is a classic overhead gunner stage but by the time you play it, you’ll be entirely burnt out and disillusioned by how few interesting things have actually happened.
When compared to Modern Warfare 2, it fails in every single way. The campaign was one of the series’ best, with a new idea introduced in each mission.
Modern Warfare 3 exists because it has to, and the studio has clearly been pressed to deliver a full game in a short time frame.
With studios unionising, this is what happens when publishers give devs ridiculous launch cycles, relying on crunch to produce a decent game.
Noone was asking for a new Call of Duty, and many would have enjoyed Modern Warfare 2 for another year.
However, Activision Blizzard knows it will sell and so has pushed to produce an inferior game when it doesn’t need to.
The worst thing about CoD:MW3’s release is that it will make MW2 defunct and we’ll all have to play this terrible game instead.
