A PETROL station that could be selling the cheapest petrol and diesel in the country has been spotted.

A photo from Sainsbury’s in the South Wales town of Cwmbran, Torfaen, shows a litre of unleaded being sold for 132.9p and a litre of diesel for 139.9p.

These prices are cheaper than the average for effectively the last two years.

The picture was snapped at around 1pm on July 24, 2023.

As of July 20, the RAC Fuel Watch website says the average price for a litre of unleaded petrol in the UK is 143.34p, and the average for diesel is 144.46p.

The average pump price for unleaded was last below 133p per litre more than two years ago, in early July 2021.

The RAC’s average peaked at 191.43p per litre in July 2022 and has been declining since, although the drop-off has slowed.

The picture is similar for diesel, which was last below 140p in October 2021 and peaked at 199.07p in July 2022.

But the RAC price tracker doesn’t account for petrol being cheaper at supermarkets, like Cwmbran Sainsbury’s, than on motorways, with this week’s supermarket average being 15p less than the motorway average – 140.40p compared to 165.70p.

Driving all the way over to South Wales will be highly impractical for many Brits but there is a little-known tip that can help drivers make big savings when they fill up.

Earlier this month, the government promised a Pumpwatch scheme to help customers find the best deals, but in the meantime you can use the handy PetrolPrices.com website.

It’ll show you the forecourts selling the cheapest petrol or diesel in your area.

You need to register with the site, enter your postcode and tell it how far you’re willing to travel for fuel, up to 20 miles, and what type of fuel you need.

The prices don’t update everyday so they won’t always be completely accurate.

But they help give you a rough idea of where might be offering the most competitive prices.

Users though can only use the website five times in a day but if you download the app you can use that as often as you like.

According to PetrolPrices.com petrol car drivers can save £226 a year, and diesel £158 by using its site.

This though depends on how often you fill up which is dependent on how often you use the car, which may vary per household.

It’s also important to note that prices will vary based on your location and from week to week, that’s why it’s a good idea to always make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Petrolprices.com isn’t the only site offering this handy comparison tool.

Fleet News and Allstar also lets you to check petrol prices across the counties so you can see how your region compares to the UK average.

Comparison website Confused.com also has a petrol prices checker that lets registered users find petrol prices within a five, 10 or 25mile radius.
