NETFLIX is looking towards supermarket partnerships with money off your food shop as its next big idea to tempt more users onto the platform.

The streaming giant has signed a deal with one huge supermarket chain.

But don’t get too excited just yet – it’s only available in France at the moment.

And even then, it’s just a trial for Carrefour customers in Bordeaux and Rouen.

Those who take up the company’s Netflix Basic with Ads for €5.99 (£5.15 / $6.51) are offered some exclusive discounts.

This includes 10 per cent off Carrefour-branded products, of which there are more than 6,000 to choose from.

Free delivery is also offered on orders worth more than €60.

Some 108 stores are participating.

Ten of those will also start selling products themed around Netflix’s biggest shows, such as Stranger Things and The Chronicle of Bridgerton.

Merch going on sale will include t-shirts, cups, bags and figurines.

Carrefour – which has more than 1,300 supermarkets and hypermarkets across France – says it could roll the deal out further across the country if it proves a hit.

“With the Carrefour Plus programme, in partnership with Netflix, we want to help our customers avoid compromising between entertainment and food,” Carrefour Group’s exec Caroline Dassié said.

Laurent Uguen, sales director at Netflix, added: “Thanks to this partnership, we hope to make our series, films and games even more accessible to new audiences.”

It follows Amazon, which has looked to partnerships to boost its own Prime service previously, working with Morrison’s and Deliveroo in the UK.

It comes as the ad-based streaming market gathers pace – Netflix having launched a cheaper ad plan in November 2022.

The firm recently revealed that the tier now has more than 23million global active users per month.
