A SIMPLE trick can save iPhone owners from wasting time every day.

It’s built into your iPhone by default – but there’s every chance you’ve missed it.

If you ever use Apple Pay on public transport, you probably double-click the side button and then verify yourself with Face ID.

Or on a Home button iPhone, you’ll have to keep your finger on Touch ID instead.

But if you’re rushing through crowds on the NY subway or the London Underground – or even a local bus – then it’s not ideal.

Thankfully there’s a clever trick that totally solves this problem, and removes the risk of your Face ID not working.

Express Pay on iPhone

The feature is called Express Mode, and it’s a standard iPhone feature – no additional apps required.

It allows you to make certain payments even if your iPhone is locked.

This won’t work for buying groceries – but it will work on certain public transport networks.

So when you’re rushing up to a payment terminal, you can just tap your locked iPhone and move on through.

“With Express Mode, you can use some of your cards, keys, and passes in Apple Wallet without waking or unlocking your device, or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode,” Apple explained.

The feature is automatically switched on when you add a new card or pass to your iPhone.

You can choose the default option for Express Mode in your Apple Wallet settings.

Even more excitingly, Express Mode can work even when your iPhone is dead.

When your battery charge gets very low, iOS can’t run properly and shuts down – switching your phone “off”.

But Express Mode may still be able to make transit payments even if you can’t wake iOS up.

It is possible that your charge is so low that Express Mode won’t work – but it’s worth a try as a last resort.

Note: this is only for Express Mode payments, and not general transactions when shopping in a store.

How to check Express Mode

Open your Wallet app and then tap on a card.

Now tap on the More button, which looks like three dots inside of a circle.

Next tap on Card Details then tap on either Express Transit Settings or Express Mode.

Now you can choose your preferred card for Express Mode.

It’s also possible to set up a different card with Express Mode on your Apple Watch, if you have one.
