YOUR Apple Wallet is packed with features – but some aren’t so obvious.

The U.S. Sun has picked out three often-overlooked Apple Pay and Wallet features that you may have missed.

Pay when locked

Your iPhone has a clever feature called Express Mode.

This allows you to make certain payments even when your iPhone isn’t locked.

“With Express Mode, you can use some of your cards, keys, and passes in Apple Wallet without waking or unlocking your device, or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode,” Apple explains.”

Express Mode is turned on by default when you add a new card or pass.

But you can choose your default options by going into the Apple Wallet settings on your iPhone.

Express Mode works on many transit systems around the world, including the New York subway system and the London Underground.

It means you don’t have to unlock your iPhone to make payments while rushing up to a transit gate at busy times.

Pay when battery dead

An extension of the above feature is paying when your battery has run out.

At certain levels of low battery, iOS won’t be able to run and shuts down.

But Express Mode may still be able to make transit payments even if iOS won’t launch.

Try tapping your your “dead” phone on a subway or bus terminal to see if it works.

Sadly, your battery can have such little charge that even Express Mode is unavailable.

But it’s worth trying as a last resort, as you can often have enough power to support a simple Apple Pay transit transaction.

Again, this only works for Express payments, and not general transactions in a store.

Driving licences

Your Apple Wallet app doesn’t just store bank cards and tickets – but identity cards too.

Several states now allow you to add your driver’s licence or state ID to the Apple Wallet.

The current list is:

  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Maryland
  • Georgia

However many more states are working on implementing mobile licences, so this list is sure to grow in the future.

To add a driver’s licence, open the Wallet app and tap on the Add button.

Then tap Driver’s Licence and follow the instructions.
