APPLE’S new iPhones open for pre-order today (well, some of them) – but which one is right for you?

The mobiles come in a variety of sizes across a range of price tags stretching from cheap and cheerful to eye-wateringly expensive.

In total, for new iPhones were announced Tuesday (from left to right): The iPhone 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone Mini

iPhone 12 – What is it?

The iPhones 12 series make up the latest and greatest smartphones from Apple, and are the US tech titan’s first to come with 5G connectivity.

They were unveiled during a virtual event on October 13 recorded from Apple’s space age headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Apple boss Tim Cook said: “Today is the day of a new era for iPhone. We’re bringing 5G to iPhone.”

In total, Apple announced four new mobiles, with a range of specs and sizes on offer.

iPhone 12 screen sizes

The new iPhones are: The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone Mini.

As the name suggests, the 12 Pro Max is the largest of the lot, measuring a pocket-bulging 6.7 inches diagonally across the screen.

That makes it the biggest mobile Apple has ever made, topping the 6.5-inch display slapped on last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Further down the pecking order, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro each come in at 6.1 inches.

While they’re the same size, the phones are different in their relative specs. The pricier 12 Pro has an extra camera on the back, for instance.

Last but certainly not least, the iPhone Mini is (unsurprisingly) the smallest of the bunch, clocking in at a meagre 5.4 inches.

That makes it one of the smallest iPhones Apple has made since 2017’s iPhone 8, and one of the smallest 5G mobiles ever built.

Apart from size, the price of each series 12 gadget is one of the key factors separating them.

Apple is staggering this year’s iPhone releases.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro open on October 16, while the two mobiles will go on general sale a week later, on October 23.

The 12 will ship for £799 in the UK and $799 in the US, while the 12 Pro will go for £999 / $999.

Pre-orders for the beefy 12 Pro Max and midget iPhone Mini will come a little later, launching on November 6.

Those two handsets will ship on November 13, starting at £699 / $699 for the Mini and £1,099 / $1,099 for the 12 Pro Max.

In terms of colours, the iPhone 12 and Mini come in: Black, White, Product Red, Green and Blue.

The Pro models come in: Gold, Pacific Blue, Silver and Graphite.

All of the mobiles will be available at the Apple’s brick and mortar stores on their respective release days – as well as its official website.

Pretty much every major mobile carrier in both the UK and US will be stocking the new handsets, too.

They include Vodafone, EE and Three in the UK, and Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.

iPhone 12 series – Which one is right for you?

With so many new iPhones to choose from, it can be a little tricky to decide which one is best for you.

One of the big factors (no pun intended) is the relative sizes.

If you’re a fan of massive mobiles – like Samsung’s Galaxy Note series – then the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a no brainer.

However, if you’ve never used a big phone before, we’d recommend sticking to the smaller models.

Larger phones can be a little unwieldy, leave your pockets looking like you’ve just shoplifted a pick ‘n’ mix, and are a pain to use with one hand.

The Pro models are also what to go for if you’re only happy using top-of-the-line gadgets with bleeding edge features – the best of the best, essentially.

If price is your main deciding factor, then the iPhone Mini is a great choice.

It’s one of the cheapest mobiles money can buy with 5G connectivity, and boasts the super-fast new A14 chip, just like the pricier Pro models.

The only drawback to this choice is the phone’s small size, which obviously won’t be for everyone.

If you’d rather fence sit and go for something down the middle, the iPhone 12 is likely your best bet.

It’s got all of the features of the 12 Pro (bar an extra camera) and at £200 less than its similarly sized counterpart is an absolute steal.

I’d expect most consumers to go for the 12 when pre-orders open on Friday.
