As the gaming industry is still largely dominated by men, it is all the more important to look at just a few of the thousands of women working every day to bring the best experiences to gamers around the world.

These are six great women who helped create some of the most inspiring video games that came out over the last year.

Yoko Shimomura

One of gaming’s most iconic composers, Yoko Shimomura has worked on the music of classic games like Street Fighter II and The King of Dragons.

Best known for writing the score of Kingdom Hearts, Shimomura was also involved in the scoring of Xenoblade Chronicles and was the sole composer on Live a Live.

This year, the remake of Super Mario RPG brought back her memorable themes, which she rearranged for the 2023 release.

Brigitta Rena and Galuh Elsa

Indonesian adventure video game A Space for the Unbound was praised for its excellent narrative about two high-school sweethearts set at the end of the world.

The game’s pixel art style is elevated by the heartfelt story penned by Brigitta Rena and Galuh Elsa, and we can’t wait to see more from the women writing duo.

Hana Takeda

Voice actors in Japan enjoy the same celebrity status as their film and stage counterparts, and Hana Takeda has lent her voice to countless characters in video games.

Most recently, Takeda reprised her role as Seonhee in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, as the leader of the Geomijul, and Liumang was promoted to a playable character.
