ANOTHER heatwave is due and the vitamin D is most welcome.

But hot weather means more problems for pets and creeping insurance and vets’ bills.

New app Dogtastic could cut costs as it gives owners access to vets for £24 per month.

I asked vet Dr Scott Miller for money-saving tips to keep dogs content this summer .

FOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE: “Water fountains and toys are a great way to hydrate your pooch and keep them cool,” says Scott.

“Walking in the cooler parts of the day or evening while exercising their minds with new tricks also ensures that your dog feels stimulated.”

My tip: I love the All For Paws Chill Out Garden Water Fountain, from Petplanet.co.uk, as it has a pressure pad dogs can press to access fresh water themselves.

It’s £19.99, down from £26.99.

SNACKS APPEAL: Scott says “Diet is one thing you shouldn’t scrimp on, as it can lead to health issues.

“Invest in good quality dog food. It will mean a cost saving on vet bills throughout their life.”

My tip: Buy bulk during sales and pet events — B&M has good offers, and you can save five per cent if you repeat-buy the same food from Petsathome.com.

MAN’S BEST FRIEND: Instead of paying to put your pet in kennels when you go away, get someone to look after them.

“Dog sharing between friends, family and fellow dog walkers makes sense,” Scott says.

“There are loads of house-sitting websites who will provide the service for free with a dog lover looking after your pets while you are away.”

My tip: Scott recommends Trusted Housesitters. You could also use the free NextDoor app to connect to those in your area. But do your security checks!

VET YOUR PET: “A nose to tail examination of your dog every day after every walk is important to avoiding unnecessary trips to the vet.

Finding grass seeds, cuts and parasites early is key to preventing them becoming an issue, saving your pooch discomfort and you the cost.”
