The surge of energy prices means many will be left struggling to make ends meet over the cold months ahead.

This is why James Longley, managing director of Utility Bidder, has shared the exact temperature you should put your heating on.

He explained: “Over the summer months, homeowners across the country have been given a period of respite from paying extortionate energy bills but as we enter autumn and winter, the need to heat the home will become more frequent.”

With many people worrying over the financial burden of switching the heating on, Longley shared his advice to keep costs low without risking your health

He continued: “Studies have suggested that the ideal temperature to heat your home is between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius during the colder months, whilst the World Health Organization has also recommended heating the home at around 18 degrees to maintain good health and a positive sleep routine.

“However, for the young, old or those who are unwell, 20 degrees is considered to be more appropriate.”

Longley went on to share that some households might think it’s more beneficial to keep the heating low, but this could be at a detriment to health.

He explained: “Many people would presume that turning the thermostat down low is beneficial, but while it might save you some money in the short term, it is putting your health at risk…

“You’ll find that you have the heating on for longer as it won’t heat the home as efficiently as it would if the thermostat is set between 16 to 21 Celsius.”

Meanwhile, another expert has revealed the exact date to turn your heating on.

Although it’s completely up to you, founder of boiler experts BOXT, Andy Kerr, said there’s a recommended time of year to do it.

He said: “Experts recommend turning on your central heating on or around October 29.

“This is because this is when daylight saving time ends and temperatures begin to fall.”

Despite this, if you have a health condition or an illness which might be made worse as a result of the heating being off, it’s worth turning it on earlier.

Kerr added: “We always advise keeping your thermostat at a minimum of 10 degrees to protect your pipes from freezing.

Frozen pipes not only stop your heating from working properly but can lead to costly complications.

“This can include burst pipes and plumber call-out fees, and it is ideal to ensure your heating system works reliably before the really cold weather arrives.”
