Aldi store manager Paul Clarke explains how to save cash on your grocery shopping

It comes as Tesco’s boss warned shoppers food prices will only go up further.

While the cost of a weekly supermarket shop will jump by £180 a year because soaring inflation is pushing prices up.

But if you’re an Aldi shopper, there are nifty ways of bagging your shopping for less, according to Paul Clarke, a store manager for the supermarket.

Paul, who runs Aldi’s Poole store, explains how you can get up to 75% off fresh food, and 30% off “imperfect” goods.

With six years of experience running stores for the supermarket, he gives his six top tips for getting a bargain.

Get 75% off fridge staples

When food gets near its sell-by date, supermarkets will often flog these items at heavily discounted prices to shift stock.

All of Aldi’s stores mark down fridge staples like bread, meat, fruit and vegetables by 75% the day before their sell by date.

You can spot these items because they have red stickers on them, showing you what you’ll be saving.

Prices are slashed before stores close – so you’ll want to make sure you time your big shop right to get the discounts.

“The times that items are reduced vary by store and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis – so be sure to keep an eye out for red stickers next time you’re cruising the aisles at Aldi,” Paul said.

“Imperfect” goods

There’s also another way to get money slashed off your shopping.

Keep an eye out for imperfect goods to get up to 30% off them.

Aldi knocks money off items that are not looking their best – such as dented tins and ripped paper packaging.

These goods are, once again, given red stickers so you know that they’re cheaper.

“The reduction stickers again offer customers even lower prices while cutting waste – though be sure to keep your eyes peeled as they tend to go quick,” Paul said.

Bag “Super 6” deals

Every fortnight, Aldi picks six fruit and vegetables to offer to shoppers at lower prices.

It also offers the same deal on fresh meat, Paul says.

Shoppers were happy when veggies were slashed to 28p recently at Christmas, when sprouts, parsnips and more at bargain prices.

Get “wonky” veg

Get “wonky” veg at Aldi where the more unattractive ones are offered for less money.

You’ll find carrots, raspberries, strawberries and more for less, Paul said.

Search for leftover inspiration

Brits waste £720 on food a year by not using the food they have in the fridge on time.

But you can make the most of what you have and avoid throwing cash away by looking on Aldi’s website for leftover recipe ideas.

“Next time you’re tempted to spend money on a takeaway or pop out for a bite to eat, take a look on the Aldi website first for some dinner time inspiration,” Paul said.
