YOU might be paying for ultra-fast Wi-Fi, but are you getting it?

Here’s five tips on how to get the most out of the broadband you pay for, according to a tech expert.

To see if you’re placement is right, check that the speed of your internet is the level you’re paying for from your broadband provider

Firstly, make sure your main router is in the centre of the house, or the centre of where you want Wi-Fi, says tech-spert Steve DOES, who has a 152,000 subscribers on YouTube.

“If you have a single router… You’re going to want to get it to the most centre part of your house.

“These routers here shoot out a signal that is going to be sphere shaped, so we’re going to get signal going left right up down all over the place and we’re going to want to be as centre as possible.”

Secondly, if you have plug-in Wi-Fi boosters, you should be strategic with your placement of them in the home.

The Wi-Fi boosters will need to connect to the main router to get their strength.

So you’ll want to spread the connection across the home by placing them in spots with weaker internet, as long as they’re not too far away from the main hub.

One to the left and one to the right of the router and around 10 to 15 metres apart is ideal, says Steve.

Thirdly, if you’ve got Wi-Fi boosters (which you can get for free with some broadband packages), you must avoid placing them in dead zones where signal from the main router doesn’t reach.

“You don’t want them on far extremes of each other,” Steve explains.

“You still want them semi-close to each other because the farther they get from each other the lower the signal strength is going to be.”

The fourth tip is checking how may walls or big parts of furniture the signals have to pass through, as these will lower the signal strength and internet speeds.

“By default you might think that you want to spread [Wi-Fi boosters] as far out as possible but remember these connect to each other wirelessly, so we do want to have them in a tighter circle and not spread out so much,” he says.

To see if you’re placement is right, check that the speed of your internet is the level you’re paying for from your broadband provider.

This can often be done via an app offered by your broadband provider.

“If you’re paying for a 100megabits make sure you’re getting 100megabits,” he says.

Lastly, if that doesn’t work and you haven’t had a new router from your provider in a while, the fifth and final tip is to call them up to see if you’re due an upgrade.
