HOLIDAYMAKERS have been warned to make some important changes on their smartphone before going away this summer.
Everything from your hotel to flight details are likely kept on your iPhone or Android handset.
So you need to be extra careful thieves don’t get hold of it while abroad, as it could become quite the nightmare.
Ash Shatrieh, Threat Intelligence Researcher and online security expert from F-Secure shares his advice on how to secure devices before you leave to minimise the risk of criminals accessing your information via a stolen device.
Turn off notifications
While notifications are useful, they could reveal key information about you.
This includes email address and codes, which could be used to hijack accounts.
While news updates and notifications from Facebook are fine, you might want to switch texts and email alerts off.
Turn on password protection to access your airplane mode settings
One thing thieves like to do when they’ve stolen a phone is turn on airplane mode.
This stops you from remotely disabling the device.
On some Android handsets you can control what appears when you slide down.

On iPhone, it’s not as simple as that – you’ll have to disable the entire Control Centre, which you can do by going to Settings, followed by Face ID & Passcode.
From there, turn off Control Centre.
Switch on Find My
Find My features on iPhone and Android help locate your device if it goes missing.
You can also wipe your smartphone as a last resort.
Ensure this is switched on.
Backup your device before leaving
Make sure all your photos, emails and everything else you’ve got on your phone are backed up before going away.
That way, if it is lost or stolen, your precious memories and information are spared.
