SUMMER is upon us, and with it, the season of sunny snaps – but don’t let the temptation of the perfect picture lead you astray.

There a number of camera apps that are reportedly pretty loose with their data protection, and are even malware ‘trojan horses’ in disguise.

There are so many apps on the Play Store that it’s almost impossible for Google to weed out all the bad eggs.

That being said, Google is typically quick to remove apps which are revealed to put user data at risk, or contain malware.

Google has removed most of these apps from the Play Store.

But you’ll still want to delete them from your device if you have them downloaded.

It’s also wise to keep an eye out for any copycat apps they may crop up in future.

Here are the apps you want to look out for:

  • BeautyPlus – Easy Photo Editor & Selfie Camera
  • Beauty Makeup
  • Selfie Camera Effects
  • Photo Editor
  • 4K Pro Camera
  • Photo Editor: Beauty Filter
  • Photo Editor: Retouch & Cutout
  • Photo Editor: Art Filters
  • Photo Editor & Background Eraser
  • Photo Editor – Filters Effects
  • Photo Filters & Effects
  • Photo Editor: Blur Image

The final one isn’t specifically for taking selfies, but it does ask for access to your camera in order to work.

These 13 apps barely scratch the surface of what’s out there – so it pays to be savvy with your downloads.

To better protect yourself, watch out for so-called ‘beauty camera’ and photo editor apps that are requesting permissions they don’t need.

Apps that show aggressive and persistent ads are a red flag, too.

Apps from unknown app developers, especially free apps, may also be suspicious.
