Specifically, by thinking of cybersecurity threats and attacks like landscape threats.

“In the field of corporate security, a threat landscape is the aggregate of cyber woes that threaten a company in a certain industry within a certain period of time,” Kaspersky explained.

“These include vulnerabilities, malware, and ransomware groups and the techniques they use,” it added.

“Why not create a threat landscape like that for yourself and base your own personal security strategy on it?”

In other words, a threat landscape can help define what you need to be protected against, and how to do it.

“This would keep you from getting bogged down with multiple layers of protection and help you keep on using the internet with at least some degree of comfort,” the firm said.

A threat actor will reach out to an unsuspecting victim via email, SMS text, or social media messages.

They will usually add a malicious link or attachment in the email or messages that steal your information.

Data leaks are another common type of threat that users should stay vigilant against.

These occur when a company or individual experiences a security breach.

In turn, this results in personal information being exposed, which can then be used by scammers.

Romance scams involve the scammer pretending to be someone they’re not on a dating app.

They will often build up a relationship before asking for money or personal information.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

There are a number of things you can do to protect yourself from these threats:

  • Never share your personal information, such as your Social Security number or bank account number, with anyone you don’t know and trust.
  • Be wary of emails and text messages from people you don’t know and never click on any links or open any attachments.
  • Always keep your software up to date as these often include security patches that can help protect your devices from malware.
