The lotto is drawn every Wednesday and Saturday night, with the option to choose 6 numbers between 1 and 59.

US-based mathematician Ryan ‘Skip’ Garibaldi has revealed the things people should and shouldn’t do, to boost their chances.

He told Wired the one mistake many people did was to pick dates to play.

Garibaldi advised to increase the probability people should go for unpopular numbers.

He added players in the US should buy their tickets from states that sell the least.

Garibaldi said: “Other advice might be, if you look at the ticket where you pick your numbers, don’t just pick a column of numbers on that ticket, for example, because some people will do that.”

He added that picking sequential numbers could be a good strategy as this helped Richard Lustig win four times on the Florida lottery, bagging more than $1million.

Lustig, who died in 2018, said he reinvested his winnings to buy more lottery tickets, used hand-picked sequential numbers and always used the same numbers.

Garibaldi, the director of the Center of Communications Research in La Jolla, California, said: “Now, this won’t increase your odds of winning.

“That kind of thing is gonna give you the same chance of winning the jackpot as any other method of choosing.

“However, if you look at a ticket like that, it looks weird. So many sequential numbers help you not share the jackpot, which is good.”

Garibaldi though added a word of warning to players, saying: “You probably will lose money, just so you know.”

Last month, experts at LotteryTexts said there are certain numbers that could increase your chances of winning.

Earlier this year, another lottery expert Francisc Csiki, from online casinos comparison service CasinoAlpha, said there are a few tactics you can try to have a better shot at scoring a prize.

Elsewhere, expert Jessica Whitehouse said that the big secret is that none of the superstitious tricks really work.

Other lottery experts have given their advice on how you can give your chances a boost.
