CHECK your wallet, down your sofa and in your pockets for a common 50p coin that could be worth a small fortune.
The Royal Arms is a familiar design often spotted on 50p coins, with millions being put into circulation since 2008.
But if you have one of these common coins with a rare date, it could fetch a lot more than its face value.
The Royal Arms coin wasn’t issued in the years 2021, 2018, 2016, 2011, 2010 and 2009, according to The Britannia Coin Company.
The coin dealer shared the tips in a recent TikTok video where they urged people to check their change for the treasure.
But there are still some coins in general circulation which feature these dates on the obverse side.
Experts from the company say these coins can be worth up to £60 – more than 100 times their face value.
We couldn’t find one worth quite this much, but we did find a circulated 2009 Royal Arms 50p which sold for £41.50 on eBay in October 2022.
The Britannia Coin Company said it’s also worth looking out for The Royal Arms 50p with the date 2017 on the obverse side.
This is because only 1.8 million were put into circulation that year, according to experts at the coin dealer.

If you do find yourself in possession of a similar coin, you could check out how others have sold similar commemorative pieces on sites like eBay too.
But remember that on eBay a buyer could pull out, which means the coin won’t have sold for the price it appears to have.
How to check if your small change is worth anything
Online tools from change experts like Coin Hunter are helpful to see how much it could be worth as well and you can also refer to Change Checker’s latest scarcity index update to see which coins are topping the charts.
Change Checker tracks which rare coins and valuable notes are worth the most.
You can check how much the coin is selling for on eBay, by searching the full name of the coin, selecting the “sold” listing and then toggling the search to “highest value”.
It will give you a rough idea of the amount that coin is selling for.
But remember, coins are only really worth what someone is willing to pay for them.
Sometimes collectors might fork out more if they’re desperate to finish a set.
Other times, you might get significantly less for the same coin.
