Since then, they have travelled the world and spent precious time as a family – making memories that will last a lifetime.

Ruth told the Express & Star: “I do still have some ‘pinch myself’ moments and then some days I go back to the old days when we couldn’t afford much.

“I remember not wanting to pay for a gondola trip in Venice because it was 80 euros. I could have afforded it, but it seemed a bit of a rip-off.”

Ruth, 45, has continued to work as a leisure centre supervisor following the win.

But husband Rob, 49, has resigned from his engineering job, allowing him to pursue a career as a teaching assistant.

The win allowed the pair, from Madeley, in Telford, Shropshire, to take their first foreign holiday in more than 20 years.

The family opted for a tour of Italy, taking in Rome, Florence, and Venice last year.

It also gave their son, 17, and daughter, 14, the chance to experience their first flight.

A Christmas trip to London – their first ever time in the capital – followed, and they’re planning a holiday to New York in December.

And they treated the family to a classic UK seaside holiday to Rock, in Cornwall.

Incredibly, Ruth nearly didn’t buy the winning ticket and needed reminding by her hubby as she went out to do karate before, heading to bed as normal.

Speaking last year, she said: “When I logged into my National Lottery app, I could see I had only matched one number, but it was telling me I had won £1 million, I was very confused.

“We talked all the way home about what we would do if it was true, but I was trying not to get my hopes up.”

The pair finally got hold of Camelot and as soon as they were confirmed as millionaires, they burst into tears.

They rushed to wake their two kids up to share the life-changing news and went across the road to tell Ruth’s parents.

The news was all the sweeter as it was her dad’s birthday.

Reflecting on their win a year later, Ruth says: “It has sunk in, sort of.”

Ruth’s winning UK Millionaire Maker code for the draw on Friday, July 22, 2023, was TLBX74150.
