“Just found out how to set a ‘global’ sleep timer for any playing media, thought I’d share,” one Reddit user said.

“I often fall asleep to YouTube videos, sometimes ones that are hours long,” they continued.

“In looking to see if the YouTube app has sleep timer functionality, I found out there’s one baked into iOS / iPadOS that’s super slick!”

While iPhones don’t have a built-in sleep sensor, there’s a clever workaround using the Clock app’s timer function, the user shared.

Below, we share how to use the iOS timer to stop your music automatically.

First, open the Clock app then select the Timer tab (it’s usually on the far right at the bottom of the screen).

Hit When the Timer Ends and scroll down to the bottom to tap on Stop Playing.

Set the timer for your desired duration (how long you want your music to play) and then hit Start.

When the timer ends, your music or podcast will automatically stop playing, letting you drift off to sleep.

This feature is a great way to save battery life and ensure you don’t wake up to your music still playing.

It’s also a helpful way to unwind before bed without having to worry about remembering to turn off your music later.

“I only found out about this recently too. I wish this was more publicized,” one Reddit user noted in the comments.

A third user shared another way to get the same outcome, by using Guided Access.

“I put a show on my iPad when I’m going to sleep, and press the home button 3 times to activate Guided Access,” they said.

“I have it set so that it locks after 30 minutes. When it locks, it stops playback, and will lock the screen after a little bit,” they added.

Guided Access limits your device to a single app and lets you control which features are available.

To use this feature, go to Settings > Accessibility, then turn on Guided Access.
