WANT a slice of the action? It might just cost you.
We reported last month that king of the Bakewell Mr Kipling has tripled the price of its cakes in the past two years alone.
The cake giant’s Bakewell slices rose from £1 to £2.75 at Sainsbury’s and its chocolate slices surged from £1 to £2.59 at Tesco.
Hayley Minn tested Mr Kipling’s Cherry Bakewells against super- market-own treats and found some that tasted even better for just a third of the price.
Tesco Cherry Bakewell Tarts: 5/5
£1.19 for six
WOW! I was blown away by Tesco’s Cherry Bakewell Tarts. They are delicious, and a steal at £1.19 for six.
They’re so moist with icing that’s got the perfect balance of sweetness.
The raspberry jam and sponge is good, plus the marzipan flavour hits you straight away.
We have a clear winner in these!
Waitrose Bakewell Tart: 3/5
£3.20 for 290g

CONSIDERING this is one of the pricier cakes I tried, this Bakewell Tart was quite disappointing.
The almond taste was really fresh and authentic, as opposed to those that taste artificial.
The pastry was quite dry though, and it could have done with a bit more jam inside.
I do wonder if it would have been better if I had warmed it up.
Aldi Bakewell Slices: 3/5
£1.09 for six
TOPPED with icing and filled with layers of jam, Aldi’s Bakewell Slices look very similar to Mr Kipling’s Bakewell Slices, but the flavour isn’t quite there.
While the sponge was really moist and the icing was just the right amount of sweet, I felt it was missing the distinctive marzipan hit you want from a Bakewell.
Lidl Bakewell Slices: 5/5
£1.09 for six
THE cheapest of all the cakes I tried, Lidl’s Bakewell Slices are really tasty, with the perfect amount of raspberry jam and icing.
The sponge was good and really moist.
I like the quirky wiggly pattern on the icing, too.
And at less than half the price of Mr Kipling’s version, it’s a no brainer to choose these.
The only problem was that I could have eaten the whole pack by myself!
Mr Kipling Bakewells: 3/5
£3.25 for six at Sainsbury’s
DESPITE it being the go-to Cherry Bakewell for most, I wasn’t blown away by Mr Kipling.
While the icing was really delicious, and the cherry not too sour, the pastry was slightly too brittle and crumbly.
But there was no denying that iconic marzipan taste.
M&S Bakery Bakewell: 4/5
£1.30 for 96g
AT £1.30 for what is essentially one serving of a Bakewell Tart, this was by far the most expensive of all the treats I tried.
However, I have to say it was delicious!
It tasted so much of marzipan and the pastry was very moist. But is it worth the money? I’m not sure.
Asda Cherry Bakewells: 2/5
£1.65 for six
UNFORTUNATELY, these Cherry Bakewells didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
While the icing on the top was lovely and soft, melting in the mouth, the texture of the pastry was quite dry.
There really wasn’t much of that almond flavour you want coming through either.
