THERE’S nothing more comforting than a cup of tea with a biscuit for dunking – and we revealed yesterday that Ginger Nuts have been voted the best for the job.
But the nation’s favourite, McVitie’s, is getting more and more expensive, with the brand this year deciding to cut the number of biscuits in many of its packs.
Self-confessed cookie monster Hayley Minn tasted supermarkets’ own versions of Ginger Nuts, rating them out of five on taste and dunkability to come up with an overall score.
And it was one pack, less than a third of the price of McVitie’s, that really took the biscuit . . .
Lidl Ginger Nuts 300g, 49p
I couldn’t believe how good Lidl’s Ginger Nuts tasted – they were so fiery and full of ginger flavour.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d have thought these were McVities!
The dunkability of the biscuits slightly let them down, as they were one of the soggier ones I tried.
But, for the price, these are definitely the ones I would go to from now on.

Morrisons Ginger Nuts 300g, 75p
Unfortunately, Morrisons’ Ginger Nuts aren’t great at all.
They were really hard and crispy, and had barely any flavour to them whatsoever.
And when it came to dunking, they were still way too hard even after a I’d dipped them for a reasonably long time.
Very disappointing and won’t buy again.

McVitie’s Ginger Nuts, 250g, £1.50
WITH McVitie’s being the UK’s biggest biscuit brand, I had high hopes for its Ginger Nuts – but, on first bite, I got more of a buttery taste than I remembered.
The kick of ginger didn’t come in until I’d been chewing it for a while.
However, when it came to dunking, there was no denying the quality.
The biscuit didn’t break at all, had a solid bite, and wasn’t too soggy.

M&S Ginger Snaps 250g, 75p
These M&S biscuits have a very strong taste of ginger, and are really fiery, but I also found there was a slight aftertaste of orange, weirdly, despite there being no orange included in the ingredients.
For dunking, they were a bit too crisp for my liking, but happy to say there were no crumbs left at the bottom of my tea either.

Waitrose Stem ginger cookies, 200g, £2.45
THESE aren’t technically Ginger Nuts – they’re much bigger and have less ginger in them (and they’re even more expensive than McVitie’s).
But they are extremely tasty – more butter than ginger – and absolutely fantastic for dunking, with a lovely bite.
You really do get what you pay for with these cookies.

Asda Ginger Nuts 250g, 55p
I could barely taste the ginger in this pack of supposed Ginger Nut biscuits.
They tasted like they had a lot more butter than most of the others – and also had a slightly burnt aftertaste.
However, they were great for dunking, keeping their shape and crunch really well.

Tesco Ginger Nuts 300g, 65p
I thought that Tesco’s Ginger Nuts were much too crispy and oily for my liking.
And I found that they had very little flavour.
But they did have slightly more of a ginger kick than Morrisons’ offering.
They stayed quite solid when I dunked them into my tea, and texture-wise they were rather nice and chewy.

Aldi Ginger Nuts 300g, 49p
THE flavour of the budget supermarket’s biscuits really packs a punch.
But there was slightly too much sugar in them, which unfortunately let them down.
When it came to dunking, the biscuit was very soggy – even after just a quick dip – and it would’ve flopped into my tea if I hadn’t quickly caught it.
