PANCAKE day is just around the corner and after January some of us might finally be looking to enjoy a sweet treat.

These days supermarkets have made it incredibly easy to whip up pancakes in a jiffy with ready-made pancake mixes available in stores.

It was the pancake shaker that really let the Tesco pancake mix down.

Even after following the bottle’s instructions, I found that my pancake mix was still a bit lumpy.

After I finally resorted to pouring it into a bowl and mixing it with a whisk, I was able to get the smooth lump-free consistency I was looking for.

Tastewise this mix was lovely once the pancakes had been flipped

These pancakes were nice and crisp out on the outside whilst the middle was soft and light – similar to that of a crepe.

Again the Asda pancake shaker wasn’t the best, I did have to resort to mixing the batter outside of the bottle which defeats the purpose of buying a ready mix.

In the end, I found this mix was just too dense and heavy even with a decent amount of butter this kept sticking to the pan.

It was quite hard to find the balance between completely cooking the batter and not over-burning the outside.

I liked the bottle shape of this Co-Op shaker mix as it has grooves so you can get a good grip.

The batter was nice and thin so it produced an airy crepe-light pancake, perfect with some lemon and sugar.

I reckon you could get at least six pancakes with this batter since it’s so thin.

I liked this Morrisons batter quite a lot it was lovely and thick but still smooth, but you really do need to put your back into it when shaking this one.

I’m not quite sure this would produce as many as six pancakes as it was so thick.

But I was left with a lovely stack of three big pancakes, I say go all for this one and add something like cream or chocolate.

I wasn’t too impressed with Icelands Green’s pancake mix.

Though they weren’t difficult to whip up, I found the taste to be very bland.

You will need to add a lot of something sweet like chocolate and sugar to make this worth your while.

Things don’t get much better when you look at the price – this mix was the most expensive one we found, but I wouldn’t say it’s worth the extra pennies.

I was super impressed with Lidl’s pancake mix.

The shaker says the pancakes make American style pancakes and it definitely felt like I had taken a trip to the States.

The batter was very easy to whip out and the pancakes came out so creamy and fluffy.

The pancakes were pretty sweet as well so I wouldn’t say that you needed to add too many toppings to these.

Even though these were a little more expensive than other brands you do get more batter mix.

Sainsbury’s Pancake Mix Shaker 155g

  • Price: £1, 90p with Nectar card

You can't see the batter you are mixing as this carton isn't see-through

The Sainsbury’s pancake mix was the only one that didn’t come in a plastic container.

You can still use this carton to mix your batter and store it in the fridge if you need to.

But unlike the other mixes, you can’t see what your batter looks like after you’re mixing it up.

Mine came out a bit lumpy but it was too late to add a bit more water as my batter was already in the pan.

My pancakes did come out quite crisp but definitely bland, so quite a lot of toppings were needed to bring this batter up to standard.

Aldi Classic Mix 232g

If there is one thing I will say about this Aldi pancake mix is that it produces very thin pancakes, but they are quite absorbent so lemon juice or chocolate goes down a treat.

I reckon you will need a lot of topping as these pancakes came out very dry.

I have to deduct points because the mix came in a cardboard box.

I had to grab a bowl and mix this the old-fashioned way which resulted in a lot of unnecessary washing up.

The price is very good you get quite a bit more batter than so of the other mixes.
