WE’RE turning our backs on sausage rolls and switching to fancier nibbles for picnics.
A new survey found 73 per cent of people have culled the humble pork pastry from their outdoor dining spread.

But there’s plenty of delicious varieties out there to pop in your basket and restore your faith in what was once a national favourite.

THESE were a lovely golden colour and I couldn’t wait to tuck in.
However, towards the end it was mainly just pastry and I was disappointed by the lack of sausage meat as well as the taste.
It was heavily seasoned and I ended up chucking the last bit away.
It didn’t taste like puff pastry at all, it was more like shortcrust.

THE great price makes these sausage rolls a good bet if you are looking for value.
The pastry treats tasted good and contained a really good distribution of sausage meat in each one.

WOW! I was really impressed – these would be gone within five minutes at my picnics.
The pastry was golden, flaky and light, while the meat was delicious and perfectly seasoned.
It contained around 34 per cent British pork, so higher than most, and cost a few more pennies than the others but it’s definitely worth it.

AN amazing price from Asda, these were rather tasty if you’re in need of a quick snack or planning an al fresco feast.
I must admit the meat was a little tough and dry but the pastry was light and fluffy.
Definitely an option for the kids to enjoy and, overall, a perfectly pleasant taste.

THE pastry here looked slightly odd, like giraffe or tiger bread, and was too thin and dry – a bit like eating paper.
These were definitely over-seasoned and too salty, with a sad-looking grey meat inside.
It would benefit from being warmed up, but that’s not what you’re looking for in a ready-to-go picnic snack.

WITH a beautiful flavour and the meat really well seasoned, these tasted like yummy roast pork in a sausage roll.
It’s easy to see why, when you know what’s in them.
Each roll contains 36 per cent British pork, which was higher than all the others.
It lost a point for price, but you certainly get what you pay for.

The pastry was just right – flaky and buttery – and the colour was good.
A good size, too, and a decent amount of meat in each one.
A well-deserved winner to tuck into on your picnic blanket.

READ the ingredients label and you would expect to be in for a treat.
These contain all sorts of fillings, including nutmeg, thyme, sage, tomato paste and garlic concentrate.
Not only did I find them to be quite bland – despite the range of added ingredients – but they also contain palm oil, which is high in saturated fat.
