Matalan in The Core Shopping Centre on The Headrow will close on February 24, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP).

A spokesperson for the firm said: “We are working closely with our affected colleagues and doing all we can to find suitable positions in our local store network.”

They added: “Customers in the area will still be able to be able to access our full range of products via our website.

“We would like to thank all of our customers in the local community for shopping with us”.

The outlet announced the closure on Facebook and locals were quick to share their thoughts.

One was upset, writing: “The Leeds I knew has almost gone now, so sad the market is no longer a market as it was 10 years ago, the shops are dwindling fast I’m now 70 and it’s taken all the spirit from Our lovely Leeds.

“The centre will be full of students and not shops thank god I’m going out and not coming in.”

Another seemed disappointed and said: “Was handy having one in the city centre…..Closest one to me now is Colton.”

A third appeared angry, “It’s getting silly,” they wrote.

YEP reported that there are plans to demolish the shopping centre as new plans have been drawn up for a development featuring a mix of shops and student accommodation.

“If there is to be more student accommodation doubt it will be a place to go shopping in the future.

“I hate going into Leeds Centre and the way it’s going in the future I wont be going there at all I will just find somewhere else to go,” wrote Amanda.

Jacky said: “it’s becoming ridiculous  no affordable housing for the working class but unnecessary accommodations for students.”

Earlier this month another Matalan in  Leytonstone shut up shop.

Reacting to the news, shoppers took to Facebook, and one said: “That’s very sad to hear.”

Another said: “Scummy council going to turn it into flats.”

“What a shame,” said a third shopper.
