A RARE set of Pokémon cards worth £20,000 were almost binned before their huge value was realised.
The sealed Pokémon Fourth Print Base Set Booster Box was owned by an unnamed 81-year-old grandfather since 1999.
The pensioner had originally bought the cards for his granddaughter and said it was “crazy” his £100 purchase was now worth so much.
In fact, his daughter said the cards came dangerously close to being thrown away.
“During the clear-out, the cards were taken out of the cupboard [and] Dad planned to throw them away,” she told BBC.
“A few did end up in a skip, but I said, ‘Blimey, Dad, some of these might be worth a bit’.”

She was correct and the set is slated to go up for sale at Hansons Auctioneers in Derby on October 17.
But it won’t be the first time the family has cashed-in on being keen collectors.
“My daughter got into Pokémon when she was young and started collecting the cards with my dad in the late 1990s It was their thing,” she said.
Their collection was so large, other assets had already sold for about £50,000, she said.

It’s hoped the latest sale will be split between family members, making life “a bit easier” for the original buyer.
“This sealed box set was the ‘in-case-of-emergencies’ item,” the daughter said.
The family’s impending pay day comes after it was revealed some fans are willing to pay millions of pounds for the rarest cards.
Another fan was willing to splash out more than £3,000 for a single ultra-rare card.
