“PSA. I just got scammed on Facebook Marketplace, like an actual identity theft scam,” Michel said at the beginning of her 1:49-second video.

“I’m going to share with you so that you don’t fall for it. Be smarter than me,” she continued.

Michel mentioned that she was approached by a female on the platform looking to purchase an item she was selling.

The scammer told Michel that she wanted to confirm some details before pick-up for her “own safety.”

She asked if she could voice-call Michel from Google. Shortly after, Michel received a code on her phone.

“She says ‘Can you send me that code that you just got and then I’ll voice call you.’ I should have Googled before doing this,” Michel said.

However, she provided the scammer with the code, and then she deleted the Facebook thread and disappeared.

“FTC has a whole article on this, it’s an identity theft thing,” Michel explained.

Using this scam, threat actors can claim your number, and even create accounts under your name.

“Thankfully, there’s a way to go onto Google Voice and take your number away from them,” Michel said.

After sharing her story, tens of thousands of users quickly liked the post and commented.

“I have heard of this. I always tell them I prefer to keep communication on FB messenger and they never write back.,” one person said.

“I occasionally sell on Marketplace and this is the most common scam,” a second person noted.

“I always immediately say ‘I don’t have a phone’ and they stop responding,” they added.

“I always mess with them, I’ll send them 6 random numbers and then they say is wrong and I keep sending wrong ones,” a third person remarked.
