ONE lucky shopper has done all their Christmas shopping for just £5 at “Britain’s cheapest shop”.

All 23 items that made it into The Sun’s basket cost just 20p each at the store in West Yorkshire.

All in all, we saved over £180 shopping at the cost-cutting store.

Items in our basket included a Top Gear board game that retails at £22.50 and a £6 bottle opener, all for the same low price.

Other 20p treats included a £9.99 Santa suit and a beginner’s Italian course on DVD, which usually sells for £8.99.

Steve Nelson, the owner of The 20p Shop in Otley, West Yorkshire, hit on the idea for a super-low cost store six years ago.

Now, thousands are flocking to make the most of the uber-low prices as December approaches and the cost of living crisis bites.

Steve said: “Everything in the shop is 20p – it’s a level playing field.

“I cannot put the prices up as that would spoil the model of the shop.

“With the price of stuff going up everywhere else and with this cost of living crisis, that makes it hard for us.”

“But Christmas should be the best time of year for every shopkeeper.”

The cheery shop owner joked: “The one thing we cannot do is a January sale – as everything is still 20p then.”

Steve explained that he keeps supply costs low by buying in bulk, even occasionally ordering in up to 100,000 items at a time.

He added: “We do a massive range of greetings cards of all sorts, with Christmas cards, birthday cards, special anniversary cards and even packs of wedding invitations on occasions.

“We expect to sell thousands and thousands before Christmas and were lucky enough to buy out a card shop in liquidation, so we won’t be running out any time soon.”

The shop has even become a bit of a tourist destination, with people coming from across the area to snap up 20p bargains.

Sue McKie, 54, visited the store two years ago from her husband’s jewellery shop across the road and has worked on the till ever since.

She said: “The shop is always busy but extra busy at this time of year.

“The customers in here are fantastic and keep coming back, some are in two or three times a day.

“Santa might be delivering goodies on December 25, but Steve drops them off every day, so the stock is ever changing.

“The one thing that doesn’t change is the price….everything is always 20p.”
