PRICES at the supermarket have shot up, even on the shelves of budget stores like Asda.

But one shopper has managed to cut the cost of their trolley dash at the discount retailer with the help of money mogul, Martin Lewis.

The MoneySavingExpert founder has revealed a trick that takes as little as one second for you to try the next time you’re at the shops.

And it could slash a whopping great amount off your bill at the checkout.

Asda, like many other supermarket giants, tends to put more expensive brands at eye-level.

That’s so consumers spot the top dollar products first and, particularly if they’re in a rush, will add them straight to their basket without a second thought.

Meanwhile, all the budget bits are on the bottom shelf where they’re less visible.

Martin says squatting down to take a look at the lower priced goods instead, could help you save on your food bill.

He’s dubbed the move the downshift challenge and essentially it involves swapping from premium and branded products to supermarket value or own-brand items.

The savings expert explained it could help save you £1,500 a year too.

Harry Ingham, a reporter at Hull Live, managed to play out Martin’s claim, and found he could save two thirds on the price of his grocery shop when putting it into practice.

“I checked the price of top-shelf coffee versus bottom-shelf coffee,” he said as he tested Martin’s theory at his local store.

“I found that Douwe Egberts cost an eye-watering £5.90, while Asda’s own brand was a mere £1.83.”

Simply crouching down to eye-up the own brand product, Harry managed to keep £4.07 in his pocket.

He didn’t leave out tea drinkers either – a Pukka green tea on the top shelf was £2.79 at Asda, according to the savvy saver, whereas the supermarket’s own green tea was only 70p a box.

That saved Harry a whopping £2.09 on the price he would have paid had he not given it much more thought.

He also checked products from yoghurts to mayonnaise, and even soft drinks like Coca-Cola, but found that everytime the “hidden” rivals were always cheaper.

It is typically a supermarket’s own-brand lines that are found hiding on the bottom shelves.

The cheapest items will be in the value or basics range, which will usually have the most plain packaging.

But before you crouch too low make sure you keep an eye out for special offers – there’s no point switching to cheap brands if your favourite product is on sale.

And you can use your usual supermarket saving techniques too, like applying your loyalty card or checking for coupons to maximise your savings to save even more cash.

It comes as welcome advice as the average households expects to fork out roughly another £271 a year on grocery bills thanks to rising inflation and more.
