A WOMAN has been slammed for reporting a local to the police after she spotted them taking a parcel – though all was not as it seemed.

The anonymous resident was expecting an expensive birthday present from her sister to arrive.

She received a text saying it had been delivered but was surprised to find it wasn’t anywhere in her porch.

Her Ring doorbell revealed that the package had blown into the street and a lady could be seen picking it up.

“I called the police to report the package stolen and emailed the video,” the unnamed woman explained.

“I found out the lady’s name via the neighborhood Facebook page and gave the police her name.”

But after speaking to other residents she found out that the woman regularly cleans up street litter on her own.

“I guess she thought my package was trash (to be fair it was packaged by my sister not a company and she probably used an old bag taped together) and purportedly threw it away,” she continued on Reddit.

“The police told me I can press charges against her since we have her on camera taking my package with my address on it that is clearly near my porch.”

Despite this, she still considered pressing charges to make the woman cover the cost of the now-binned gift.

And commenters didn’t take too kindly to it.

“Why would you go after a woman who helps clean the neighborhood with criminal charges for an honest mistake,” one said.

“That you would even consider doing that is totally mind boggling, what is wrong with you?”

But others have jumped to her defence, saying: “The woman shouldn’t be throwing anything away with someone’s name on them. She could have knocked on her door first.”

The resident went on to say she didn’t realise what pressing charges meant when the police offered it as an option to her.

“I thought it meant that she would have to pay me back, but it has become apparent from the comments that it has nothing to do with that,” she said.

“I am not an evil person, I don’t actually want this lady to be charged as a criminal, I just wanted to be reimbursed for my headphones.”
