WHATSAPP has just announced a huge update that will be game-changing for users.

Users can now remain on the Meta-owned app even when the internet is down or a block is in place.

This means the app could even be used in countries that have banned it.

This will be made possible via something called proxy servers.

Meta said it made the decision as it’s wrong to “deny people’s human rights and cut people off from receiving urgent help”.

The update comes after recent internet shutdowns seen in countries like Iran.

It said: “Our wish for 2023 is that these internet shutdowns never occur.

“Disruptions like we’ve seen in Iran for months on end deny people’s human rights and cut people off from receiving urgent help.

“In case these shutdowns continue, we hope this solution helps people wherever there is a need for secure and reliable communication.”

The feature can be found in the WhatsApp settings menu and it lets users enter the name of a proxy server.

This will then allow them to connect to the internet.

A proxy server acts like a virtual bridge when someone has been cut off from their original form of internet which may be their own WiFi or data from their smartphone provider.

Using a proxy server can allow you to connect to the desired app or website when your previous method has been blocked.

WhatsApp is offering guidance on its website on how to use a proxy server.

The WhatsApp blog states: “Choosing a proxy enables you to connect to WhatsApp through servers set up by volunteers and organizations around the world dedicated to helping people communicate freely.

“If you have the ability to help others connect, you can learn how to set up a proxy here.

“Connecting via proxy maintains the high level of privacy and security that WhatsApp provides.

“Your personal messages will still be protected by end-to-end encryption — ensuring they stay between you and the person you’re communicating with and are not visible to anyone in between, not the proxy servers, WhatsApp, or Meta.”

If you can’t see the new feature in your WhatsApp app you will need to update it.
