WHATSAPP is improving the way you backup chats but it could cost you if you’re not careful.
The messaging app is developing an ability to export your backed up chats and data from Google Drive.
Such a change is designed to make it easier when switching smartphones.
But according to WABetaInfo, the service is also planning an option to import the same backup on Google Drive again as well.
It comes after reports emerged earlier this year that Google Drive’s unlimited storage for backups could soon be coming to an end.
Google Drive currently offers 15GB of cloud storage space for free.
WhatsApp on Android doesn’t count towards this for now.
Apple users have iCloud as their backup, which is already restricted by their chosen storage tier.
Of course, when – and if – the changes happen it won’t charge you without asking – you’ll need to set it up first, but it’s still worth noting.
It’s thought Google Drive will still offer a certain quota of free storage for WhatsApp backups.

“Thanks to this option, users will finally have more control over their backups on Google Drive in the future,” WABetaInfo said.
“We do not know why WhatsApp is developing a similar feature, whether it is due to the changes mentioned above or the exported backup might be imported on WhatsApp for iOS later.”
The leaked screenshot comes from an early beta test, so nothing is confirmed for the moment.
We’ll have to wait and see whether it comes true in a future update.
