FACEBOOK has left its users baffled after seemingly removing a popular feature over the weekend.

The dark mode in Facebook for iOS – a display setting that protects the eyes – has been down since at least Saturday.

According to 9to5Mac, the problem is likely a bug. Facebook’s parent company Meta has not provided an explanation for the issue.

The dark mode of other Meta apps such as Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp are working as normal.

Dark mode is a display setting for user interfaces that when activated displays white text on a dark background.

Thousands of apps have introduced the feature in recent years in an effort to make their interfaces less harsh on users’ eyes.

Facebook’s was rolled out in 2020 and users can activate it in the app’s settings or via “system-wide dark mode” on iOS.

That involves digging into your iPhone settings to activate dark mode on all apps where it’s available.

Currently, users are unable to activate dark mode on Facebook for iOS through either the Facebook app or through iOS Settings.

The Sun can confirm that uninstalling and installing the app again does not appear to resolve the issue.

The Sun has reached out to Meta for comment.

Users took to other social media platforms such as Twitter to respond to the sudden absence of dark mode.

One person wrote: “I realize this is a huge first world problem, but not having dark mode on the iOS version of Facebook really sucks when your entire phone is all about dark mode.”

Another tweeted: “The audacity of Facebook to turn off my dark mode when I opened my phone this morning,” while another said, “To the people who use dark mode, are you even ok?”

Switching to dark mode is said to benefit your eyesight when you’re looking at your phone screen in a dark room.

By switching to dark mode, text becomes easier to read and protects your vision by reducing the amount of strain on your eyes.

Studies have suggested that reducing the amount of blue light shone into your eyes in the evenings can improve your sleep.

Blue light affects the amount of melatonin released in an individual’s body, hindering their ability to become drowsy, according to the Sleep Foundation.

This comes after Facebook began alerting users that it is axing some features that amass data about users’ whereabouts.

The U.S. social media giant said that Nearby Friends and Weather alerts will be shut down by June.
