INSTAGRAM has a silent feature that can be used instead of unfollowing or block someone outright.

The mute feature can save embarrassment from either side of the fence – whether you’ve been muted or have muted someone.

Is there any way to tell if someone has muted you on Instagram?

Instagram designed the feature to go unnoticed.

This is so it could be a less obvious way to limit a users’ exposure to certain accounts, instead of blocking or unfollowing – which other users can easily pick up on.

When an account is muted, you can still see their posts and stories, and they can see yours.

Users can also access their page, and won’t be notified of any changes.

Muting just means users no longer get that accounts content in their feed.

While it is meant to be the more low-key option, there are a handful of indicators that suggest you’ve been muted.

  • Check their engagement with your content. If someone who regularly liked or commented on your posts suddenly disappears, then you may have been muted.
  • Check their activity. If they have been actively liking and commenting on other posts, but yours remains silent, then you may have been muted.

  • Check your Instagram stories. If they no longer view your stories but previously had been, then you may be muted.
  • Send a DM. If you send the person a DM and you don’t get a response after a period of time while they were active, then they may have muted your messages. They won’t be notified of any direct contact if you have been muted.
