THE plastic £10 note launched just a few years ago could be worth THOUSANDS of pounds – and you can spot them by keeping an eye on the serial numbers.

One of the tenners was bought for £3,600 after the seller noticed it had the serial number AH17 75 – the year of Jane Austen’s birth.

What are the rare and valuable £10 notes?

Only specific notes will be popular with collects so it’s important to keep your eyes peeled for the more valuable tenners.

As with the £5 note, those with the AA serial numbers will be popular with collectors.

Interestingly, as the £10 note is slightly larger, there are 54 notes per printing sheet compared to 60 with the £5 note. This means there are millions of AA combinations that could potentially crop up.

How can you tell if your tenner could make you THOUSANDS?

When the Bank of England launched the £10 note featuring Jane Austen in 2017, ChangerChecker.com revealed its predictions for the notes that everyone will be searching for.

The key is to keep an eye on the serial numbers for each note, that can be found on the top left of the face with the Queen’s image, just under the £10 value in the corner.

ChangerChecker.com claims that the notes collectors should be looking out for are:

  • The serial numbers 16 121775 and 18 071817 as they represent the author’s date of birth and death.
  • The serial number 17 751817 as it’s her birth and death combined
  • The 28 011813 as it’s the date when her most celebrated novel, Pride and Prejudice, was first published.

While the serial numbers JA01 and JA75 (Jane Austen’s birth year) and JA17 (the year of Jane Austen’s death) may be popular too, but it could take many years before the notes enter circulation.

There may also be a rush to find the AK47 and James Bond 007 notes too. Notes with consecutive numbers, eg, AA12345, are also popular with collectors too.

Which notes will never enter circulation?

When the Bank of England issues a new note, it donates those with a significant or low serial number to the people and institutions that were involved in the development of the note.

For example, the first note AA01 000001 is given to the Queen. The note will then be given to the current Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

When the £5 note was launched, the Churchill War Rooms received a note with the serial number AA01 001945, the year that World War Two ended.

Rare coins and valuable notes – is yours worth a mint?

How can you make money from your rare note?

Some notes could fetch thousands of pounds. The £5 note with the lowest serial number available to the public – AA01000017 – sold for £4,150 at auction in October last year.

Since then some plastic fivers have sold for thousands of pounds on eBay.

A plastic £10 note featuring the portrait of Jane Austen sold for THOUSANDS of pounds on eBay.

We only searched for notes which were listed as sold but often bidders fail to cough up the money.

That’s because eBay has no power to make buyers pay. If it has gone through then the sale shows that there could be many more notes in circulation which could be worth much more than a tenner.

Although sellers beware – so far the £10 note has failed to attract as much interest as the plastic fiver did before.
